STATEMENT
The mixed media paintings and drawings that comprise the exhibit There is a Crack in Everything are based on photographs of distressed surfaces in Nassau – peeling paint on dilapidated buildings, rusted garbage cans, old machinery. Because the photographs flattened the subject, I was able to focus on a spiritual quality of color and on expressive mark making rather than on texture. The subject as a fact quickly lost significance, and the works become abstract as they were translated from photographs, to drawings, and finally, to paintings. I have borrowed the title from the refrain in Anthem, a song by Leonard Cohen: “There is a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in.” I interpret this to mean that imperfection can be a form of revelation. These lines reinforce the premise of Cohen’s novel Beautiful Losers: that there is a beauty and a brokenness in everyone. It is this sprit that I hope to communicate in my most recent body of work.
